I was waiting for my 7 hour bus journey to start, fully aware that the night might be anything but restful. Usually, I prefer trains for overnight travel, but this time, the bus surprised me with its comfort—reclining seats, a Bollywood film up front, my music, and lively stops at roadside restaurants. All traces of fatigue disappeared when the first light of dawn revealed the beautiful, misty landscapes of Shimla. In just five hours, I had left behind the bustle of Delhi for the serene coolness of the Himalayan foothills. The adventure started early with our first cup of hot, fragrant chai at the Shimla Bus Stand.
We took a moment to admire the countryside and enjoy our chai before starting the short climb to our hotel perched atop one of Shimla’s many peaks. Strolling through the city, I was struck by how distinct Shimla is from other hill stations. On our route, children played football while others enjoyed the invigorating morning air. The gentle rains left no trace of disorder, only freshness.
After checking in, our excitement led us straight to the vibrant Mall Road and Lakkar Bazaar, a paradise for shopping lovers. Whether you're after handicrafts, shawls, unique jewelry, rare books, miniature paintings, or locally made wooden items, there's so much to discover. Constructed during the British colonial era, Shimla’s ambiance is both elegant and lively, with highlights like Christ Church, the Town Hall, and the sunset point. More than a mere tourist destination, the city feels like a charming blend of India and Europe—its British heritage ever present. By evening, we savored dinner at a small café, rounding off a day rich in discoveries.
You can start your trip to India with a journey through Shimla’s iconic Mall Road, enjoying its colonial façades, bustling shops, and cozy eateries.
The next morning, we decided to explore "The Glen" on foot, venturing into the pristine deodar forests and learning local history along the way. Two hours later, we joined families relaxing by Chadwick Falls, the favorite local picnic spot, before enjoying a delicious lunch in a nearby restaurant. In the afternoon, visits to temples like Tara Devi, Jakhu Temple—famous for its giant Hanuman statue—and Mahunag Temple revealed more of Shimla’s cultural tapestry. It’s a city best explored on foot, each corner offering its own surprise.
Wishing to celebrate our last Shimla evening in style, we asked our hotel to arrange a bonfire among the trees, and they obliged with warmth and hospitality. We shared stories, played cards, and enjoyed music around the fire—a memory that would linger long after the embers faded.
Shimla continues to charm visitors in 2025 with its dynamic mix of heritage and modern attractions. Beyond classics like the Ridge and Mall Road, don’t miss the Summer Festival on the Ridge every April-May, or a ride on the UNESCO-listed Kalka–Shimla toy train. Nature lovers can trek to Chadwick Falls or catch the sunset from Shaily Peak. Food tours featuring Himachali specialties like Madra and Siddu are unforgettable, and the historic Rashtrapati Niwas (Viceregal Lodge) now offers deeper guided explorations. For winter adventurers, try ice skating at Asia’s only natural open-air rink.
Plan to stay near Mall Road for easy access to shops and cultural events, and remember that much of Shimla’s charm is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace on foot.
On our final morning, as we left behind the curving roads, tall deodar trees, and genuine warmth of Shimla’s people, I felt sure that these Himalayan landscapes would draw me back. Even in the cool mornings of Delhi, a taste of chai brings Shimla’s magic alive again—until the next adventure.
