Setting out for this enchanting region, our adventure began in Kochi, India’s lively southern port. With a spontaneous spirit, we headed for famed Fort Kochi and the backwaters of Alleppey, curious to see what wonders Kerala had in store for us. If you're longing for authentic discoveries, a trip to India promises a captivating blend of history, nature, and culture.
Arriving in Fort Kochi, the atmosphere instantly felt unique: vibrant homes, a welcoming ambiance, and the sight of the iconic Chinese fishing nets stretching into the sea set the scene. Seafood lovers will be delighted by the market’s offering—freshly caught, bartered straight from the fishermen and cooked in traditional Kerala style. Sharing lunch with locals, we were introduced to the subtleties of malayalam cuisine in a truly convivial setting.
After a scenic ferry journey to Vypin Island, we uncovered the tranquil shores of Cherai Beach, away from the crowds. Thirty kilometers north of the ferry dock, this stretch of pale sand seemed endless, an idyllic setting for sunset contemplation. Visiting during a festival week, we immersed ourselves in Kerala’s vibrant spiritual rhythm, with both Hindu and Catholic celebrations lighting up the night. Processions featuring elephants, traditional drum music, and a sea of devoted participants created an atmosphere both mystical and exhilarating.
For a true sense of Kerala’s soul, time spent exploring the legendary backwaters is a must. Although we passed on the famous houseboat overnight stay due to a tight schedule, we glided through meandering canals aboard a wooden “shikara.” Along the waterways, daily village life unfolds—fishing, washing, trading, and children swimming under coconut palms. Lunch was an explosion of flavors served on a banana leaf, surrounded by the peaceful scenery of Kerala’s lush interior.
Our last day led us to a camp in Kodanad, where elephants participate in sacred rituals. Witnessing elephants bathed and gently cared for in the river left us moved and awed by these majestic animals. Afterwards, a stroll along the Periyar River brought us deeper into Kerala’s wild landscapes. Submerged in nature’s tranquility, moments like these remind you why Kerala is considered a paradise for travelers.
The best time to visit Kerala is from October to April, when the climate is pleasant and ideal for exploring. Kochi International Airport serves as the primary gateway, with easy road access to highlights like Alleppey and Munnar. Beyond the famous backwaters, don't miss Fort Kochi’s colonial heritage, hill stations such as Munnar, the wildlife-rich Periyar sanctuary, and the palm-lined beaches of Kovalam and Marari. Take time to experience Ayurvedic wellness, vibrant local festivals, and savor fresh seafood delicacies. Each journey here is enriched by Kerala’s deep-rooted culture and warm hospitality.
