Do you know about a beach paradise called Covelong near Chennai?
On your way to Mahabalipuram, and nearly 40 kilometres away from Chennai, you will find the small yet busy town of Covelong. Once a bustling port town which flourished under Saadat Ali Nawab, it was later occupied by French General Labourdonnais in the year 1746. But a few years later the town faced decay and destruction when Robert Clive occupied it in 1752. But it has awakened up from its ruins, and today this place is well-known for its fishing activities. Another major attraction of this place is the fine beaches. The calm and soothing atmosphere of this place is a much-talked about attribute among the travellers. The soft gentle breeze, the beautiful sandy beaches and the blue waters of the Bay of Bengal are nothing short of a paradise. And if you are planning a visit to Covelong, the best months would be from November to February.
As you prepare the itinerary of Covelong, there are three places that must be included in your list; the first and foremost being the Covelong Beach. Known as one of the most amazing beaches around Chennai, it is part of the Coromondel coastline. Nestled among beautiful trees, you can stare at the azure blue of Bay of Bengal and feel refreshed. All you need is a place to sit and a book. The calm atmosphere of the place will make you feel relaxed. And if you are in love with the waters, there is no dearth of activities. Sports enthusiasts can take part in surfing, swimming and fishing. A little away from the main coastline, you can have a glimpse of the beautiful ancient fort on the Covelong Beach.
One of the most frequent places or tourist attractions in Covelong is the Dutch Fort. This fort is almost in ruins, but local people will still talk about the history of the place. And you will get to know that it was the Dutch East India Company who have built the fort. Even before you stand before the ruins, you will have an unmistakable sense of colonial history which has ruled the country for years. And most of these colonizers have left their indelible imprint on India in many forms.
