Dreaming of traversing the legendary landscapes of Rajasthan, I finally found myself in the holy town of Pushkar. Nested in the ancient Aravali range, on the edge of the Thar Desert, Pushkar is a mesmerizing destination—claimed by legends to have been created by Lord Brahma himself. As I set out on my journey, the blend of exhilaration and awe was palpable in this spiritual town, famous for its iconic Pushkar Camel Fair.
I started my adventure after checking into a local hotel, heading directly to Panch Kund Road to experience the authentic transportation of the area: a camel ride. Hopping atop a decorated camel, I moved past the atmospheric Gurudwara and small sand dunes, crossing fields dotted with vibrant roses and marigolds grown for temple offerings. During the trek, sweeping views of Pushkar Lake, its surrounding ghats, and countless temples unfolded below—a sight that leaves every visitor enchanted.
After about twenty minutes riding, I found myself joined by a group of other travelers, each equally eager to experience the heart of Rajasthan. The roads gradually melted into village paths before giving way to the golden sands of the desert. Here, Pushkar truly reveals its essence: a land of tradition, spirituality, and pastoral life.
As I continued deeper into the desert, I marveled at picturesque stairs leading to the Saraswati Temple atop the hill, and watched flocks of sheep graze under the watchful eye of their shepherd. Free from the distractions of modern life, every moment here invites you to connect with the land and its timeless rhythms.
Reaching a tranquil sunset point, I dismounted to admire the spectacular landscape as the sun dipped behind the dunes. My loyal camel—a gentle creature I fondly named 'Smiley Man'—posed graciously for a few memorable photos. As dusk fell, I carried with me a new sense of joy and calm, knowing Pushkar would always beckon for a return.
Pushkar stays alive year-round, but it truly dazzles during the legendary Pushkar Camel Fair. In 2025, the fair will take place from 30 October to 5 November, coinciding with the sacred Kartik Purnima festival. This world-renowned event gathers thousands of camels, horses, and cattle alongside cultural performances, music, dance, and bustling markets—a spectacle not to be missed for any traveler in Rajasthan.
Planning your next trip to India in autumn offers the perfect chance to immerse yourself in Pushkar's festive atmosphere, explore beyond the royal cities, and embrace the traditions that make Rajasthan such an incomparable destination.
