See our guaranteed departuresExperience a journey through Jaisalmer where golden sands, ancient fortresses and vibrant desert life reveal the soul of Rajasthan. Let yourself be charmed by the city’s extraordinary heritage and must-see desert adventures on an unforgettable itinerary.
Nested in the western reaches of Rajasthan and bordering the immense Thar Desert, Jaisalmer—also called the "Golden City"—is a destination that captivates every visitor. Embark on a trip to India to discover the legendary Jaisalmer Fort, standing proud near the edge of the old Silk Route. My journey began with colleagues from Shanti Travel, setting out to reconnect with partner hotels and explore the vibrant activities we offer guests.
After completing a 17-hour overnight train journey from Delhi, we arrived in this enchanting city brimming with culture and history. Our first stop was the elegant Gulaal Hotel, which offers a refreshing retreat with a scenic pool. From here, we set out to visit several other distinguished hoteliers positioned outside the citadel; these hotels impressively frame sweeping views of the iconic Fort.
As the afternoon golden hour approached, we set off by jeep, joined by our local friend Antriksh, whose knowledge of the region brought stories to life. Our route took us to the enigmatic Kuldhara, an abandoned village steeped in Rajasthan folklore and mystery. According to legend, the Paliwal Brahmins fled their home centuries ago, leaving behind an enduring curse that renders Kuldhara uninhabited even today.
With the desert breeze accompanying us, we continued to the outskirts where our camel caravan awaited. Setting out across the dunes on camelback was a thrilling experience—a moment where excitement easily conquered apprehension. As dusk painted the landscape in shimmering gold, conversations melted away and attention turned to the endless expanse of sand and sky.
Our desert adventure culminated at a camp, welcomed by steaming chai and the chance to roll fresh chapattis, the staple bread of Rajasthan. We dined while the sun melted over the horizon, a spectacle of colors unique to the Thar Desert. For those seeking a truly memorable night, staying overnight in the camp—either beneath the stars or in tented comfort—offers a magical experience, but our schedule meant a return to the hotel.
Next morning, enlivened by a fort-view breakfast, our exploration began in earnest. Guided by Khanshayam, we entered the living Jaisalmer Fort, a rare fortress where people still reside within its timeworn walls. Protected by four ancient gates, the fort exudes medieval grandeur, and the lively streets inside are home to bustling markets, daily rituals, and remarkable Jain temples—be sure to tour these intricate structures, always following the respectful clockwise path.
Our journey continued to the famed havelis, especially Patwon Ki Haveli. These stately merchant mansions are renowned for their carved sandstone facades, appearing as intricate lacework in the desert sun. The golden hue and artistry earned Jaisalmer its well-deserved nickname. We capped off our tour with a visit to the royal palace, now a museum preserving the spirit of the Maharajas with evocative portraits and restored chambers.
With its desert adventures, living fortress, and cultural richness, Jaisalmer continues to offer unique and immersive experiences to travelers year after year. Prepare to be enchanted by the spirit of Rajasthan’s golden gateway.
