Our adventure started at Old Delhi railway station, where five of us boarded our train to Jaisalmer and Jodhpur. The lively chaos of the station set the stage for our long journey—a true introduction to India’s energy. The overnight train, departing at 6pm, promised an arrival in Jaisalmer by late morning. For a comfortable and safe ride, budget travelers should pack snacks, stay hydrated, and keep belongings secure. In AC coaches, carry extra sheets for chilly nights, while first-class travelers enjoy private cabins. The trip included lengthy stops: Jaipur (10 minutes), Jodhpur (40 minutes), and Pokaran (25 minutes), offering glimpses of Rajasthan’s unique rail life.
Planning a trip to India by train unlocks a spectrum of experiences for any traveler. From local trains connecting key cities to luxury journeys such as the Maharajas’ Express and Palace on Wheels, Rajasthan's railways are an experience in themselves. For 2025, routes offer both premium comfort and authentic connections to cities like Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Udaipur.
Waking up to soft sunlight, we found ourselves at Pokaran station, notable for its calm ambiance and for the train’s engine change. This pause gave us a brief glimpse into a quieter side of Rajasthan, contrasting with bustling Delhi.
Jaisalmer station greeted us with surprising tranquility and bright heat—especially in September’s off-season. Our hotel, situated opposite the breathtaking fort, provided the perfect base for exploration. The gleaming sandstone fortress, home to a vibrant community, beckoned us to discover its centuries-old walls. A short tuk-tuk ride brought us into the heart of the fort, where Jain temples and winding bazaars revealed the city’s living heritage. From market shopping for camel leather goods to sipping tea at Killa Bhawan, every stop was alive with color and history. Don’t miss the view of Gadi Sagar Lake—an oasis that inspired quiet reflection.
The next morning, an eco-farm adventure awaited. A local tuk-tuk brought us to Bada Bagh, then onward to Pabu ki Dhani near Pohar. This eco-tourism haven, crafted from natural materials, blends tradition and sustainability with heartfelt hospitality from the owners. We enjoyed local snacks, a live music performance, and learned about daily rural life before wandering beside a serene lake.
After lunch, we set out for an unforgettable stay at Fifo Tent House, near the sweeping sand dunes south of Jaisalmer. Here, a camel ride at sunset offered endless vistas and lasting memories. At night, we slept beneath the stars on the cool desert sands—an adventure only Rajasthan provides. The next day started with a traditional breakfast, marking a return toward Jaisalmer for the next leg.
Heading back through Pokaran, we paused for a delicious lunch at the impressive fort, before journeying on to Jodhpur. In the bustling blue city, we settled into Ratan Villas, a tranquil oasis set amid lively markets and ancient palaces. Shopping, exploring local restaurants, and savoring heritage hotels enriched our experience.
Jodhpur’s Mehrangarh Fort stands as a must-see, towering above the city and offering panoramic views of blue-washed houses. Entry includes access to lifts and exhibits—well worth the price. After soaking up history, we strolled through the clock tower market, testing local thalis and hunting for unique souvenirs. Our last hours were spent by the hotel pool before catching the night train home, reflecting on a journey filled with royal architecture, warm encounters, and the vivid spirit that defines Rajasthan.
Rajasthan weaves together heritage, adventure, and cultural discovery—an invitation to travel that rewards every curious soul.
